The Downside
There are a few points about the Canon PowerShot SD780IS that reflect the limits of how much technology Canon has managed to miniaturize into such a tiny box.
When you’re recording videos there’s no optical zoom. You can still use digital zoom but that’s it. The video sound is quite good for a recorder this small yet some buyers have complained that the sound can be a little monotone.
Even for still images you’re limited to an optical zoom of only 3x. I have found this plenty for the photos I tend to take. This is a general purpose camera for
typical kinds of personal pictures. It’s also great for capturing a white board quickly, one of the big reasons I wanted it.
The view finder is tiny but usable.
At the higher ISO’s, higher than ISO400, some reviewers complain about noise or graininess but it’s not noticeable to me. It looks on a par with other compact cameras and I’ve seen some spectacular shots taken at the higher ISO’s. I am definitely not, however, a professional or even a highly trained photographer.
In order to play HD video back on your computer you’ll need at least a Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz processor, but that reflects the nature of HD video rather than limitations of the camera. If you have an older computer you can play the video directly on your monitor or TV with an HDMI cable and get a good sharp picture even on a big screen.
